OCA St. Louis stands with 800,000 DACA recipients, seeks legislative fix
The board of OCA St. Louis, one of three founding chapters of OCA National, the nation’s second oldest Asian American Pacific Islander civil rights organization, stands with the 800,000 students and DREAMers who will be impacted by President Trump’s cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This includes the estimated 18,000 AAPI students who applied for DACA status. The DACA program was started by President Obama and allows undocumented youth who were brought to the United States by their parents to come out of the shadows and work, serve in the military, and pursue higher education without fear of reprisal.
OCA St. Louis supports a legislative fix to ensure that these students do not have to leave the only country that they remember. According to FWD.us, thanks to DACA, 97% of these students are in school or the workforce. Without a fix, the end of the DACA program could lead to job losses – as many as 30,000 monthly, and billions of dollars of lost revenue to businesses that have to engage in job rehiring and training.
OCA St. Louis Immediate Past President Caroline Fan stated, “DREAMers are integrated into every aspect of American life. They serve on the front lines of the military, support our families as healthcare professionals, and are both the classmates and teachers for citizen children. Bright, ambitious young people have been able to leave less than minimum wage jobs and pursue graduate degrees in law and medicine. They have been seeking the American Dream and to give back to the nation they love. Without a work permit, their efforts would be wasted. This has always been the promise of America. We stand with the DREAMers.”
Founded in 1973, OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. OCA aims to embrace the hopes and aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans. The St. Louis Chapter is one of the 3 founding chapters. Today, there are over 80 OCA chapters and affiliates across the country.
